A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
