Jair Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a escape threat

Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This included trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his child.

His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the return of democracy in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the judge's ruling was the chance of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.

The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist United States President Donald Trump, prompting him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will experience a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also asked that the former president be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was determined responsible of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the time, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
