Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The UN estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in both countries.
