Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when numerous of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
