The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event draws close, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of fans with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers function at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
