The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
