Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then found many other marked vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for information.
A high-ranking official commented the incident left him without words and required to be solved quickly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman focusing on people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
