Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments made by captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
